Riverstown Church of the Sacred Heart, (Protected structure) Co Sligo

2008 - 2009

Key features:

Lead repairs and new protective flashings to all horizontal surfaces of Church Tower and replacement of rain water goods.

Types of work:

Lead work and roofing/flashings

Special areas:

Specialist lead work

Other considerations:

The photographs indicate the new works to the church undertaken in the summer of 2008. The photographs illustrate how the horizontal surfaces are now covered in lead flashings with a drip in the outside to throw water off the building. These flashings are chased into the structure. The lead is also laid in certain lengths to allow for movement due to thermal expansion, and the mitred corner joints are welded on site. This work is very skilled, and only a small number of craftsmen in Ireland continue to carry out this type of work.  The workmanship is of the highest quality and we believe these remedial works will ensure the Church tower is adequate weathered for the next 75-100 years.
